
When Trigg County cut into Lyon County’s second half lead and trailed 35-28 early in the third quarter, the Lady Lyons turned to their trusty press that sparked a 20-0 run on their way to a 67-43 win at Wildcat Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The game had been postponed from last month due to sickness in the schools.
A.J. Navarro’s 3-pointer with 5:37 left in the third quarter got Trigg to within seven points. Piper Cotham buried a 3-pointer and Lilly Perry had steals and buckets on back-to-back possessions to begin Lyon’s big run.
The Lady Lyons converted 10 Trigg turnovers into nine points in the frame as the Lady Wildcats, trailing 55-28, didn’t score again until 7:08 was left in the game.
Cotham helped get Lyon County off to a fast start with a trio of 3-pointers and 15 points in the opening quarter as Lyon County got out to a 22-8 lead.
Trigg County, coming off its second win of the season two days prior, outscored the Lady Lyons in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 33-22 at halftime.
However, by forcing 21 turnovers, the Lady Lyons could get up 25 more shots than the Lady Wildcats.
Lyon County was also strong on the glass, outrebounding Trigg 42-28 with 22 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points. It also helped them outscore Trigg 30-12 in the paint.
Trinity Taylor scored 11 points and pulled down 14 rebounds – 10 on the offensive glass – for the Lady Lyons. Cotham finished with 22 points and four assists, and Courtney Collins and Perry each contributed 10 points with Perry adding five steals and Collins chipping in with nine rebounds.
Trigg County got 14 points and 12 rebounds from freshman Veyda Grinols. Reese Bush added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The win moved Lyon County to 12-1 with its 11th straight win – the best 13-game start in school history. The 2015-16 Lady Lyons began 11-1 before a loss to Graves County.
It was also Lyon’s fifth straight win over Trigg County. The Lady Lyons leads the all-time series 90-42.
With the loss, Trigg County fell to 2-8 and 0-2 in the district. Lyon County is 3-0 after its first run through the district schedule.
