SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE – Jason Leek

When you play basketball at one of the smallest schools in the 2nd Region, you can often be overlooked especially when you see players from the bigger schools get the accolades.

For Heritage Christian Academy senior Jason Leek, he lets the numbers do the talking and isn’t worried about the chatter that may or may not come with it.

Jason entered the week scoring 32 points a game for the Warriors, solidly in the state’s top three. It’s the culmination of a career at HCA that saw the school win a Kentucky Christian Athletic Association state title before making the move to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

Jason was a starter on that state championship and there were whispers that his game, and that of the Warriors, would not translate well when they took the leap to playing a schedule of KHSAA competition.

As a sophomore, Jason scored 16 points a game as the Warriors advanced to the championship game of the 2nd Region All A Classic. That same season, the Warriors bowed out of the KCAA with a state championship as Jason was named the tournament MVP.

Last year was HCA’s first full season in the KHSAA which also made them eligible for postseason play. The Warriors were 16-15 as Jason averaged 25 points a game while shooting 52% from the field and 78% at the free throw line.

If last season was a breakthrough for Jason, this season has him crashing through walls like Mr. Kool-Aid thanks to an offseason workout routine that saw him gain weight and muscle. It’s seen him still shoot 51% from the field while scoring at a 33 points per game clip.

Already the school’s all-time leading scorer, an accomplishment he reached last month at 1,771 points, he set a new single game record with 51 points against Crittenden County on January 3. He’s also closing in on 2,000 career points, which is an impressive number with over 1,500 points coming against KHSAA competition.

Thanks to his work off the court and numbers on the court, he is starting to pick up some traction in recruiting circles as he looks to continue his playing career in college with an academic track in physical therapy or sports medicine.

In this YSE interview, Jason discussed his future plans, playing alongside a young team, and his off-court work.
