Storm Nets Game-Winner Against Hoptown with 45 Seconds to Play

Maybe the full moon had something to do with the wild finish in Mortons Gap.

Hopkinsville appeared to salvage a 4-4 draw at Hopkins County Central when Erick Hernandez scored on a long shot with just 55 seconds remaining in the contest.

However, the homestanding Storm countered just 10 seconds later.

Jude Mitchell ran onto a bouncing long ball in the middle of the field and headed the ball over the Hopkinsville goalkeeper, who had charged out to try to make a play. The ball rolled into the net, lifting Hopkins Central to a 5-4 victory Monday night.

It was the second goal of the night for Mitchell, who also had an assist for the Storm, which has won three straight and is now 6-3.

Meanwhile, Hoptown (4-3-1) got three goals from Hernandez (the Tigers’ other tally came on an own goal). Anthony Evangelista had two assists.

The teams combined to put up four goals in the first 12 minutes of the contest while settling for a 2-2 deadlock at halftime.

Riley Dunlap added two goals for Hopkins Central while Talon Stephens had one goal.

Jak Mitchell had two assists while Mason Gallimore tallied one assist.

William Clevenger made 14 saves in the Storm net.

Hopkins Central will hit the road for a date at Owensboro Apollo on Tuesday.

Hopkinsville travels to Calloway County on Tuesday.
