Jeremy Leek moves up from assistant coach to head coach of the Heritage Christian Academy in 2025-26. While he probably wishes he had his son on the floor for another season, Leek feels good about his first squad.

Jason Leek was the region’s top scorers last year at 33.6 points a game and is playing for Bethel University this season.

The Warriors were 11-18 last season and won their district tournament opener against Fort Campbell before falling to Hopkinsville in the semifinals.

The Warriors have several guards expected to step in and provide offense. Nathan Wheatcraft (5.7 ppg.) is a senior who can drive to the basket and step behind the line and shoot a three-pointer. He was second on the team last year with 27 of them.

Sophomore Cadyn Travis is another Warrior who can do the same and, like Wheatcraft, has a knack for getting to the free throw line, and sophomore Aaron Hensley is one of the best athletes on the team at the guard position.

“We have been making progress in the preseason, and I’ve seen some improvement from our big guys. But we have to work on the physicality on the basketball court,” Leek said.

The Warriors do have some depth, and Leek expects it to improve as the season wears on.

Junior Bryce Askew will see some time in the backcourt, while 6-2 junior Noah Arvin and 5-9 Jacob Morgan give Leek some size alongside Oesch.

However, Leek wants to see his team play fast and aggressively, trying to create turnovers and cash them in for points.

“We’ve been talking and working on pushing the ball faster, but we have to be patient and look for a good shot. We also have to rebound the ball.”

Heritage Christian Academy will open its season on Thursday at home against Caldwell County before a trip to Shelbyville on Saturday to play in the Kentucky Christian Athletic Conference State Tournament. Ironically, the tournament is at Cornerstone Christian Academy, now coached by former HCA skipper Matt McGowan, who took that job earlier this year.

HCA will also be playing in the Roy’s Bar-B-Que/First Southern Bank Classic in Russellville after Christmas.
