Aaron Crawford, known as Mick to his family, hoped to be a starter on Knott County’s football team this season.

Eastern Kentucky has had so much to deal with recently with the catastrophic flooding and the outpouring of love and support by so many has been heartwarming at a heartbreaking time.

However, I still had no words for the news I first saw from Darrell McCoy and David Jones of the D&D Sports Network about the death of high school junior Aaron Crawford of Knott County. The duo posted on Twitter that he was doing “hero’s work, shoveling mud for flood victims” when he had issues.

Knott County athletics director Justin Amburgey said Crawford hoped to be a starter on the offensive line this year. He also wrestled.

“He was an extremely hard worker who loved football and wrestling.  Just an all-around great kid who just wanted to be helpful and be a good teammate,” Amburgey said.

Crawford’s mother, Ronda, made this post on Facebook after her son’s passing:

“We appreciate all the prayers that have been going up for our Mickey. He had been helping flood victims for about three days and started not feeling well so he came home. We rushed him to the ICU and he’s been on the ventilator for about four days.”

“For those of you who don’t know, the doctors confirmed that we had lost him this morning. We do not know the reason and have no explanation for what happened. We are looking into Organ Donation because we know that Mick had an amazing heart and would give anyone anything they asked from him. It’s what he would want.”

“If Mick could give us his final wish it would be that everyone come to know Jesus because that’s the most important thing in this world to him. We love you all. Thanks again for the prayers. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.”

Junior Aaron Crawford, right, was a football player and wrestler at Knott County who was helping flood victims when he had health issues and later passed away.

McCoy said Crawford’s passing is another difficult blow for an area that was already hurting.

“The Mountains are hurting so bad right now and now something like this hits, we can’t win,” McCoy said.

Amburgey is struggling himself coping with Crawford’s unexpected passing.

“He thanked me all the time for the school starting wrestling last season. It was our first year. We bought a used mat from LCA and were hoping to buy our own this season. The mat got destroyed in the flood,” the athletics director said. “This is all just so hard.”

Indeed it is and what a loss when a young man was trying to help others and then for reasons we will never understand lost his life.

      1. Like really ?
I assure you, no one in these mountains are WORRIED about covid, monkey pox, or politics !

More so , our OWN community and health departments are traveling on SXS , four wheelers , mules, etc just to get those who need help and supplies to them ! Traveling for WATER, food , cleaning supplies , AND tetanus shots !

        Please , educate yourself .

  2. I became friends with him last year while subbing at KCCHS. He was one of those students that you knew he was so giving and loved life! He would always greet me with a smile and ask me how my day was going. Feel be example of a good hearted person who loved life and the Lord! See you later brown eyes! Ms. Conley will learn to play chess just for you. I promised you I would. You tried to teach me.

  3. Larry, do you know if there has been any kind of fundraising to buy a new wrestling mat for Knott County maybe with Aaron’s name on it? I know I’d be happy to contribute.

    1. Look up Tass Robertson on Facebook. He is one of the head coaches and owner of Grundy Wrestling Club. I’m sure he would love to help. He and his family is a very warm hearted, giving, and God fearing people. I used to wrestle for them and we had some financial problems that was going to have my parents pull me from the wrestling team. When the Robertsons heard the news, they paid off our home. That’s just a small example of how loving a generous they are. I’d message and see if they could help or at least donate a mat or something.

  4. I am so sorry for this family’s loss but also sorry for his community loss because he seem to be such a good young man who had a lot to offer . Prayers for his family an friends 🙏💔

  5. So glad to know that he loved the Lord and with that I believe truly that is where he’s at now God bless the family and may his love comfort and keep you
