Caldwell County basketball fans in the CAB gym Monday night saw a historical performance — even though, perhaps, they didn’t realize it.

The Tigers opened their 63-31 win over Fulton City with 35 straight points — the longest scoring run in Caldwell basketball history.

The Tigers led 33-0 after one quarter and scored the first bucket of the second period before the visiting Bulldogs finally connected from the field for their first points of the night.

The previous mark had been a 33-0 run to open the game in a win at Trigg County on Dec. 10, 1991. Caldwell led that game 32-0 after one quarter.

Caldwell’s girls also had a 33-0 run to start a game — leading Fort Campbell by that score on Dec. 18, 2017.

It wasn’t all offense for the Tigers on Monday. The defense forced 17 first-quarter turnovers, leading to many easy baskets on the offensive end.

Caldwell substituted liberally after the early onslaught, with every player in uniform seeing quite a bit of action. After the first quarter, Fulton actually outscored Caldwell 31-30 the rest of the night.

Still, Caldwell was never threatened after the hot start while improving to 2-1 on the season. The Tigers’ only loss in their first three games was an overtime setback to Webster County.

Just two Tigers scored in double figures in the contest. Collin Whittington had 14 points — 10 in the first quarter. Jaydarius Wilson had 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Jack Roach added eight points and six boards.

Jamal Martin had 14 points to pace Fulton City.

Seven of the Bulldogs’ 11 field goals in the contest were 3-pointers, including four by Martin.

After rolling out to the big lead after one period, Caldwell held a 39-10 advantage at halftime. It was 52-17 through three quarters.

The Tigers’ biggest lead of the night was 42 points, 61-19, midway through the fourth period.

It was just the third ever meeting between the two schools. Caldwell has taken all three.

The Tigers will look for their third-straight win this season Tuesday night when they host Trigg County. That will be part of a girls and boys doubleheader at old Butler Gym in Princeton. Caldwell’s girls will play Crittenden County in the opener.
