Blazers Outlast Mater Dei in Eight Inning Contest

Ryan Luckey’s two-out double in the top of the 8th gave University Heights Academy the lead as the Blazers took a hard fought 7-5 win on the road Saturday night over Evansville Mater Dei. The win was the Blazers’ 5th in a row and 12th in their last 13 games.

AJ Hogart got UHA on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-run double. Mater Dei responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

The score stayed that way until the top of the 5th inning when the Blazers struck for three runs to take the lead back at 5-3. The bit hit in the inning was a two-run double from Hayden Hunt.

After loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth, Mater Dei got back-to-back sac flies to draw even with the Blazers at 5-5 going into the seventh inning.

Ty Grace got the game-winning rally started in the 8th with a one-out single. Grace then scored on Ryan Luckey’s double. Luckey would later score on a wild pitch to make it 7-5.

Mater Dei got two runners on base with two outs but then Bryson Turner was able to induce a groundout to end the game.

The top part of the UHA order was big Saturday night. Ryan Luckey, Cadence Gibson, Hayden Hunt, and AJ Hogart, all had two hits each for the night, as the Blazers outhit Mater Dei 12 to 10.

Hunt and Hogart had two RBIs each.

On the mound, Bryson Turner picked up the win in relief, going the final three innings, giving up no runs on two hits, striking out four, and walking two.
