Hoptown Lady Tigers Claim Second Straight Region Runner-Up Trophy

The Hopkinsville Lady Tigers brought some hardware home from the Class 2A Region 1 Meet on Tuesday, capturing second place for the second consecutive year.

Hoptown went 1-2 in the 400-meter dash with Alanni Quarles and Grace Cansler running season-best times. Quarles’ winning time of 1:02.29 was a personal best and edged Cansler by .15 seconds at the tape.

Quarles also added a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash at 28.47 seconds, while Cansler placed seventh in the same event with a time of 29.28.

In the sprint events, A’Ireona Spikes finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.87 seconds, and Jayla Brunson added an eighth-place finish at 14.73.

Alexis Herrera-Lovato placed third in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:25.76. Her time is the 13th fastest in school history and the fastest of those not named Lataviya Felder or Meghan Easton.

Kaydon Coats was sixth in the 800 in 2:46.98.

Lauren Mayes earned runner-up honors in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:59.38, a personal best and third fastest in school history. Mayes was also fourth in the 1600-meter run at 5:46.78.

Leaunna Wilkerson led the hurdle events for the Lady Tigers. She finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.89 seconds and later placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles at 52.55.

The Lady Tigers finished second in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:53.33 and added another runner-up finish in the 1600-meter relay at 4:31.15.

Hopkinsville’s 400-meter relay team also placed third with a time of 53.44.

In the field events, Heaven McCollough finished third in the high jump after clearing 4 feet, 6 inches.

Amani Jones placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 78 feet, 4 inches, while Chandni Jones was sixth in the discus at 74 feet.

Chandni Jones later added a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 28 feet, 6 inches, while TaLaijha Cherry placed sixth at 28 feet, one-half inch.

Hopkinsville finishes second in the team standings to Calloway County, which won its sixth straight region championship.

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Class 2A State Meet on Friday, May 22, at the University of Kentucky. The next 10 times/distances/heights statewide will also qualify.
