Wood’s 5-Hit Shutout Leads Caldwell Past Lady Storm

Alexis Wood fired a five-hit shutout as the Caldwell County Lady Tigers defeated Hopkins County Central 9-0 Monday in Mortons Gap.

Wood struck out eight and did not walk a batter as Caldwell’s girls improved to 5-8 overall and 3-1 in 7th District play.

The Lady Storm is now 1-8 and 0-2.

Caldwell hit Hopkins Central with four runs in the top of the first inning and then added two more in the third and three in the sixth.

Ellie King singled home the first run of the game for the Lady Tigers. Tink Clark drove in another run with a single while Josie Palm had a sacrifice fly to to left to make it 3-0. Evie Jo Freeman knocked in another run with a single to extend the margin to 4-0.

In the third, Addison McDaniel singled home the first run while Kayliana Bender picked up an RBI with a groundout to short.

Caldwell’s three runs in the sixth came on two wild pitches and an error.

Clark was 3-for-4 with a triple and scored twice to lead the Lady Tigers’ 13-hit attack.

McDaniel went 2-for-2 while King and Freeman were each 2-for-4. Daelen Kizzee finished 2-for-5.
Wood and Josey DeHart each had singles.

For Hopkins Central, Addison Blanchard was 2-for-3 while Layla Sorrells, Emily Ballard and Myleigh Jarvis each singled.

Caldwell has won 23 of its last 24 meetings with the Lady Storm. The Lady Tigers lead the all-times series 35-27.

Caldwell’s girls will be on the road again on Tuesday when they travel to Murray High School.

Hopkins Central heads to Union County on Tuesday.
