
Henderson County High School claimed the Class 3A Region 1 track and field title on Saturday on their own campus.
Senior King Combest claimed the title of the fastest runner in western Kentucky with a pair of wins in the sprint events.
Combest won the 100-meter dash in 10.99 seconds and followed with another first-place finish in the 200-meter dash in a school-record time of 21.87 seconds. His 200 time was .02 seconds faster than the previous record set by Jaheim Williams in 2023.
Tyce Smith added a 10th-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.67, while Jack Dalton was 15th in the 200-meter dash at 25.25.
In the 400-meter dash, Jordan Haynes placed third overall with a time of 51.91, while JShawn Gumbs added a sixth-place finish at 52.50.
Ross Plummer finished fourth in the 800-meter run at 2:03.25, with Christian Smith close behind in fifth at 2:04.06. Keegan Cummings placed 10th in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:23.38.
Tyreese McCombs finished fourth in both hurdle events, posting times of 17.26 in the 110-meter hurdles and 43.52 in the 300-meter hurdles. Troy Butler was fifth in the 110 hurdles at 17.43 and eighth in the 300 hurdles at 46.81.
The Colonels captured regional championships in the 2×50-meter relay at 14.71, the 400-meter relay in 42.98 (sixth-fastest in school history), the 800-meter relay in 1:30.00 (sixth-fastest in school history), and the 1600-meter relay in 3:29.20. The 3200-meter relay team added a runner-up finish with a time of 8:21.39.

In the field events, Mason Webb earned third place in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 10.25 inches and finished fourth in the triple jump at 41 feet, 8 inches.
Alex Eckels placed seventh in both jumps, recording marks of 18 feet, 11 inches in the long jump and 37 feet, 11 inches in the triple jump.
Austin Dunn turned in a runner-up finish in the pole vault after clearing 12 feet, 6 inches. Mattix Sohne placed seventh in the event at 9 feet, 6 inches.
In the throwing events, Jacob Nunn earned second place in the shot put with a toss of 51 feet, 1.25 inches and finished third in the discus with a throw of 136 feet, 1 inch.
Owen Smith placed seventh in the discus at 116 feet, 6 inches, while Preston Gogel was eighth in the shot put with a mark of 37 feet, one-half inch.
Henderson County’s point total of 117 points was 23 more than second place Marshall County.
The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Class 3A State Meet on Saturday, May 23 at the University of Kentucky. The next 10 times/distances/heights statewide will also qualify.
